Orange Spain has announced that it successfully made the first voice and data call using a Standalone (SA) 5G mobile network in collaboration with ZTE. The trial was carried out in Valencia via a 5G NR base station, 5G core network and test devices, reaching speeds of 876Mbps with a single user handset and 3.2Gbps with 12 handsets working simultaneously. The operator was keen to stress that the network technology was 100 percent 5G, whereas previous 5G calls trials in the country were made using Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture.
At MWC 2019 earlier this year, Orange completed what it described as the world’s first 5G video transmission in real time on a commercial network in collaboration with Ericsson. Last year it announced that it would be conducting trials of 5G technology this year partnership with ZTE, Huawei and Nokia in Barcelona, Seville, Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Malaga, Valencia and Bilbao.
