Finnish operator Digita said it is running dozens of pilot projects involving remote water metering. The operator’s IoT service director Ari Kuukka said there are approximately 4 million water meters in Finland, and its ambition is to digitise them all. Municipal water corporation Haminan Vesi was among the first to test the new equipment in the Port of Hamina, for which it ordered 100 meters in the early summer of 2018.

The water sector also requires smart meter importers, distributors and system providers to enable the storage of consumption data and invoicing. Kuukka said Digita works closely with logistics company Onninen, invoicing firm Vesitieto and consultancy CGI.

Haminan Vesi ordered 100 meters for the Port of Hamina in the early summer of 2018. Haminan Vesi operations engineer Kai Veikkolainen said the utility considered building its own network but opted for Digita’s instead as the safer choice, and has not regretted its decision.

Meters are equipped with a fixed LoRaWAN radio and battery that can sustain the wireless connection and remote reading of the meter for roughly ten years. The readings are normally transmitted once per day.
