T-Mobile US said it has completed its virtualized packet core buildout across its nationwide footprint using Cisco distributed software defined network (SDN) architecture. The operator also announced a new deal with Cisco and with Crown Castle, as it looks to its deployment of 5G.
With Cisco, the companies signed a five-year agreement to continue buildout of T-Mobile’s 5G Packet Core and Policy Suite spanning hardware, software and services. With the system, T-Mobile will be able to deploy 5G across the country. T-Mobile US expects to launch 5G for customers in 2019 when smartphones become available, with nationwide coverage scheduled for 2020.
Under the second deal, Crown Castle will deploy additional small cells within and beyond the existing footprint of T-Mobile US. This will enhance the operator’s 4G network capacity and also prepare for 5G.
