Telia Norway said it is joining forces with Tampnet and CGI to provide NB-IoT services to Wintershall’s Brage oil platform in the North Sea. It said this pilot by Telia is the first use of NB-IoT offshore and the connectivity will run on Tampnet infrastructure. Telia and Tampnet have placed sensors supplied by 7Sense on the platform and CGI is providing analysis, data storage and visualisation.

Among other things, Wintershall will be able to monitor noise in the living quarters to ensure levels are kept within approved ranges. It will also be able to check air quality and to optimise energy use. The pilot will run from December 2018 to June 2019.

Through its communications services contract with Tampnet, Wintershall has recently had the Brage platform upgraded to the latest version of 4G.
