Swiss Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard has established a working group to discuss the risks of 5G mobile network construction, in particular the issue of electromagnetic radiation. The requirements and risks of 5G network construction will be analysed and recommendations proposed by mid-2019. The working group willl be led by the Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) and will closely cooperate with regulator BAKOM.

At the same time, BAFU is preparing a revision of the Ordinance on non-ionising radiation protection, in order to cover the legislation gaps, which may pose barriers for the construction of 5G networks. These include in particular the introduction of monitoring of non-ionising radiation and the definition of an installation limit for frequencies between 900 and 1800 MHz. The revised ordinance is to be adopted by the Federal Council in the spring of 2019.

In spring, the Council of States rejected the relaxation of base station limits.
