IoT connectivity provider Sigfox has announced a contract to monitor the quality of service (QoS) and security of the telecommunications towers of Telefonica’s infrastructure subsidiary Telxius. Under the terms of the deal, Sigfox will use its Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN), to monitor the nearly 16,000-plus telecommunication towers owned by Telxius in five countries in real time. Sigfox said the system allows event and status changes to be provisioned in a central cloud independently of existing local installations or communication channels in order to initiate emergency measures or trigger maintenance and repair orders.
Sigfox said its signals also have a greater range than mobile devices and are more robust against radio interference. The sensor system comes with autonomous power supply that can often be used adaptively and requires no gateway or intervention in existing infrastructure. The company added that in the future highly sensitive motion sensors will be employed to detect potential torsion, essential for the QoS of mobile phone towers.
