Huawei Technologies is facing increased security investigation in the UK over the use of software from US-based Wind River Systems, reports Reuters.
A UK Government report released in July said that technical and supply chain ‘shortcomings’ exposed UK telecoms network based on Huawei equipment to new security risks. Three unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that one of these concerns is Huawei’s use of Wind River’s VxWorks operating system, details which were not made public in the report.
According to the sources, the VxWorks version being used by Huawei will stop receiving updates and security patches from Wind River in 2020. However, some of the network products using this software will still be in service, potentially exposing UK telecoms networks to risk.
